H & M, really?

H & M, really?

I consider myself a fashionista. One of my mainstays when I shop is H & M and Banana Republic. They fit my classic style. As runway, print, model for Elite Chicago. It provided me such an amazing experience. Meeting photographers, designers and other models was a total blast. I have met so many gracious and talented people in the fashion industry.

When I saw this ad for H & M it posed so many questions for me.

The first, why did the parents of this child allow them to model in this ad? I find it hard to believe that they saw this and gave the thumbs up to run this ad featuring their child. Then the thought of…compensation. Could money buy your dignity? I guess we all have our price.

Secondly, who at H & M saw this and thought this is great stuff? Imagine the layers of departments and red tape this ad had to go through to actually go to print. Photographers, graphic designers, creative directors, productions assistants, designers, editors, marketing. Really, so everyone in the Marketing or PR department saw this and was like this will make us millions!

You know what, the answer is yes they did! This speaks volumes to the heighten racial dynamic in our country today. If in 2018 it’s alright for any persons of the African American diaspora to be categorized as a member of the animal species. A monkey? Really.

H & M apologizes for using child in racist sweatshirt advertisement. But is that all they can do? This outright display of disrespect to our community deserves more than just a empty apology. The action of this ad speaks to the insensitivity that not only runs rampant in H & M but major retailers in the fashion industry as a whole.

Finally, How can we make H & M and other retailer hear our voice and take action to bring this wrong to the right column. Let me know your thoughts. Like and share on social media.
